Security Management
To all TechEd attendees, Jesper Johansson is an old favourite, especially with those who look to being a little on the secure side. This is a set of three articles that he has written explaining why we shouldn’t really use passwords, because they are too weak even if you DO use numbers in them. He explains the technology behind why a passphrase is better. However, go read the article, definitely worth it.
Sharp Develop
So, you don’t want to pay for Visual Studio.NET.? OK, well the framework is free, windows forms can be downloaded. So, all you really pay for is the IDE? Well here’s a free IDE based around the GPL Open source licence. Take a look. Special: Apress are giving away a free e-book entitled Disecting a C# application. Inside SharpDevelop. http://www.apress.com/free/index.html
Test Driven Development
Would you like to run unit tests, from anywhere in your VS Solutions, with a single click? Supporting all versions of Microsoft VS.NET, so there are no compatibility headaches and all the good stuff like nunit, mbunit etc are supported too.
For more information go to http://www.testdriven.net/
Optimising ADO.NET
This is a great article from John Goodson on some good ADO.NET best practices. Which objects to use and when and what goes on under the covers. He also explains why we shouldn’t really be tempted by the commandbuilder. Go and see at
MSDN-TV
This episode of MSDN-TV covers the inside on software factories. What they are & what you need to know about them.
Webcasts – Soup to Nuts
You might have heard me rant about these webcasts and how good they were. Well, they are all over now, but you can still get to see them by visiting the webcast archive. There are 14 webcasts altogether and they cover all the aspects of windows forms development including some advance ADO and Enterprise stuff. David Anthony is an excellent trainer and I also recommend some of his other works.

Something a bit, well different - The Code Room
3 Developers, one laptop & 5 hours worth of battery power. . . The challenge? To build an Ecommerce website. This is a professionally directed show. Go see how they all got on.

Book of the Month - Office 2003 XML for Power Users
I got this book because I guess I like Apress books. However, I also recognised the author, Matthew MacDonald has done some books that I have found very useful over the last year or so. I expect this one to join that group. Now, if you have managed to avoid doing any XML at all (please tell me where you live and I will come and open a hotel there!!!!) this books opening chapter gives one of the best introductions to XML I have found anywhere. Matthew then goes on and works his way through schema’s and then on to the real stuff about using the XML features provided by Office 2003. Now, I understand that not everyone has upgraded to Office 2003 however you will upgrade to another version of Microsoft Office at some point and I cannot imagine the information in this book becoming out of date anytime soon.

Windows XP Styles
This is a free control from Skybound software that overcomes the limitations of the built in style support of the .NET framework. The control is free for both commercial and non-commercial use.
Jingle Bells, Jingle All the way
How about a free book? Well, PDF Actually. Anyone recognise the names Aaron Skonard and Martin Gudgin? Well, all I can say is you should do. Point your browsers in the direction of http://www.theserverside.net/books/addisonwesley/EssentialXML/index.tss and get yourself a free pdf download of their essential XML quick reference….
Diagnosing Email Problems in .NET
Jim Mischel gives us a complete tour of the system.web.mail.smtpmail class that allows you to send email from your applications (no more having to instantiate outlook object!!!). It’s an easy class to work with and here is all the savvy you need to get going.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this years property bags and I look forward to bringing you more good stuff in 2005. As always rants, raves complaints or just a genuine plain old disagreement drop me an email to geoff.hirst@vbug.co.uk.
