VBUG: 'Code at your fingertips' with Serge Baltiyskiy - ONLINE EVENT
Date: Tue 30 October to Tue 30 October 2007
Topic: VBUG TECHNICAL SEMINAR - OPEN TO ALL
Overview: Code at your fingertips with ReSharper support for VB.NET and mixed-language solutions This demonstration focuses on the productivity benefits achieved by extending Visual Studio with ReSharper. The quick overview shows what simple things you may be missing from the base IDE that are keeping you from developing with pleasure. The presentation will prove interesting for VB.NET developers and especially for those who maintain mixed-language solutions. It is based on developing a sample VB.NET application, all live coding, and has no prerequisites besides general knowledge of .NET. The highlighted topics include: Writing code. The “use-before-declaring” development strategy, as enabled by ReSharper, is represented by completing a code fragment first and only then creating the needed properties, methods, and classes from their first usages. This approach is shown to make the development process more straightforward, linear, and efficient. Exploring code. As a project code base grows in size, developers start spending more time reading existing code than writing new code. A way to address this productivity issue is demonstrated with the help of ReSharper’s sophisticated support for fast search and navigation in the hierarchy of classes and/or methods. Its reliability ensures up-to-date information even when it involves looking in incompilable files, crossing the C#/VB language boundary, or checking for late-bound references in “strict off” mode.

Date: Wed 28 November to Wed 28 November 2007
Topic: VBUG TECHNICAL SEMINAR
Overview: Getting Back to basics with Ian Lloyd: In these days of Rapid Application Development (RAD), .NET controls and WYSIWYG editors, it's easy to forget that for many people, it all started with the humble notepad.exe. The art of creating clean, simple and meaningful markup is becoming more difficult thanks to the tools that supposedly help in developing quicker solutions. Ian will be looking at where we find ourselves today, and looking at the issues that have come about through the use of RAD tools, including the problems with AJAX, accessibility oversights and trying to find where the semantic markup is hiding. This will be a reminder of some of the fundamentals of web development that have been masked by layer upon layer of shiny development tools.

We'll build maps into an application using the Virtual Earth map control. We'll let our users browse their photos using the Windows Live Spaces Photos control, we'll enable authentication in our app using Windows Live ID and we'll show how you can leverage the Windows Live Search functionality too.
